CHARITY * UNITY * FRATERNIY * PATRIOTISM
GENERAL UPDATE – Well we have had a real variety of weather and conditions the last few months including high water (needed a couple of inches to get on the hurricane deck), too much snow for our driving community, long stretches of very cold temperatures and rarely a nice sunny day with temperatures close to 50 degrees.
Here’s a brighter picture: Daylight savings time starts March 14th, St. Patrick’s Day is March 17th and spring is supposed to be here Saturday, March 20th. March 20th (10A-3P) is the Columbia Ladies Annual Card Party, which is their primary fund raiser for the year and then that evening (still March 20th) the Council hosts its Second Annual Cabin Fever Dance (8P-12) ($10 per person) with all door proceeds going to the council. The Cabin Fever Dance last year was a tremendous success with 154 people attending. The volunteer professional musicians (some officers and members of our council) did a great job and just as important everyone had fun and enjoyed themselves.
CLUBHOUSE – Bad weather obviously hurts our attendance at Friday and Sunday dinner and to try to make up some of that loss we are promoting specials for Friday night during Lent. There will be a fish platter for $7.75 and Ron will have a special entrée each Friday priced accordingly. If you have a group of eight (8) or more we will take reservations for tables.
BOAT DOCKS/HURRICANE DECK – So far the high water has caused only a small amount of visual damage to the docks but we still have plenty of time for more high water. Bucky Beaver has not given up on his goal of trimming all the trees on the river bank around our docks. At last count at least three small trees are laying on the main walkway between the clubhouse and the flagpole patio. As weather permits they will be removed and we can start our planning on having the docks ready to go hopefully around Derby Week.
On Friday, March 12th, boat slip fees and boat club dues will be collected between 5 and 7:30PM on the second floor. There is also an application for a boat slip in this issue of the Good Knight. The following night, Saturday March 13th, we will have the annual K of C
Boat Club Installation of Officers Dinner Dance here at the clubhouse which is probably the formal beginning of the new boating season. PARK/POOL – We still have opportunities for lifeguards this summer at our pool. We have one commitment already but could use a couple more. If you know someone please have them call and leave contact information on our voice mail. Training is already going on to satisfy the requirements to be a lifeguard in Jefferson County. A person must be sixteen years old and hold current certifications to be eligible to be hired. One place that provides all the necessary training is Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center, 201 Reservoir Avenue, for registration call: 897-9949. CORPORATION CHARITY PROJECT – SAVE THOSE ALUMINUM CANS. The last load of cans generated $230.36 for the Council Charity Fund. Remember, ALL THE REVENUE the cans bring in goes directly to the Charity Fund and on the first Monday in Derby Week we will disburse the funds at our annual Charity Dinner at the Galt House.

Greetings everyone, I hope everyone survived Super Bowl Sunday; too bad for the Indianapolis Colts though. As I am writing this, the sun is out for the first time in five days! It’s nice to see a good snow melt off, but the TV guys are forecasting more snow! Will it never end!
Other than the usual Friday, Sunday dinner, and Wednesday lunches, there is not a whole lot to report this month. We are planning a First Degree on Sunday March 7 at 10am. If you are sponsoring a candidate, please notify them, and accompany them to the degree. Candidates need to report at 9:30 am, and we will start at 10.
As of this writing, it is looking a little more favorable for Cabin Fever Dance #2. If the stars line up, and no major snowstorms, etc. the date is Saturday, March 20th.
A sure sign of spring, be looking for your chances for the K of C Charity Dinner. Derby is early this year along with Thunder over Louisville.
Another sure sign of spring will be getting the park and pool ready to go, along with the boat docks, etc. Dock Chairman John will begin collecting dock fees soon. I don’t know about you, but I have had my fill of snow and cold for this year.
I will see you at the Council meeting on March 3, and I would like to offer everyone a Happy St. Patrick’s Day and hopefully see you at the Council Cabin Fever Dance on the 20th.

Fraternally, Fourth Degree Chalice Fund As many of you are aware, our Fourth Degree Assembly participates in an optional Chalice Fund. The Chalice Fund enables Sir Knights to purchase a chalice and have it inscribed with their name on the bottom. The chalice is presented to a Priest of the Knight’s Choice. Sir Knights may opt to donate their chalice to a Priest while they are still living, or if they are deceased, the family of the deceased Knight will determine the recipient of the Chalice. Thus daily the chalice with the name of the Knight is raised in the sublime sacrifice of the Mass each time the Chalice is used. As of this date, seventy-two (72) of the Knights in our Assembly are participating in the Chalice Fund. There are seminarians (especially in Africa and in the Philippines) who are in need of a chalice. If your chalice has been paid for in full and you wish to get it engraved and donate it soon, please order it by contacting me.
Honorary/Honorary Life Membership Requirements Dear Brother Knights, A question has been asked about the dues structure for Bishop Spalding Council, namely, what is the dues structure? There are three levels of membership- Regular, Honorary and Honorary Life. The dues for the Regular members are $100 annually; the dues for the Honorary member are $10 annually and the Honorary Life member is exempt from dues. In order to qualify for Honorary membership one has to reach the age of 65 and have been a member for 25 consecutive years. In order to qualify for Honorary Life membership one has to reach the age of 75 and have been a member for 25 consecutive years. If you think you qualify, please drop me a note at the Council address with your information, and if you are eligible, I’ll process the forms. Wayne Daugherty, FS

ARCHBISHOP JOHN FLOERSH Fourth Degree By: Ken Rosenbaum Faithful Captain Our Faithful Navigator, SK Jim French, is out of town this month and he asked me to write this article. SK French is reportedly on the beaches of Florida on a "mission" we are all sure that when he returns he will report next month about all of the souls he saved while "working so hard". Fourth Degree dues notices have been mailed to all 4th Degree Knights on the roles so please remit payment to our Faithful Comptroller Greg Johnson. If you did not get a payment notice please contact SK Greg. Fourth Degree Knights interested in ordering Regalia should make their wishes known to our Faithful Comptroller SK Greg Johnson since he is ready to place another order soon. Proudly representing our dedication to the K of C by joining the Color Guard and wearing the Regalia at Chalice memorial services and church ceremonies is very enjoyable and truly personally rewarding experience. Please consider joining the Color Guard. One last request, we would love to see you at the Club for Wednesday Luncheons and on Friday and Sunday evenings for dinner. We proudly have the best and most inexpensive meals you can buy in town. Added to the delicious food is the chance to enjoy a beverage, meet old friends, get acquainted with some new fine and friendly folks, and faithfully support our Club. See you in March.

Jim French FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR

readabout long-term care insurance. Just as there are very few people who do not have a “long-term care experience” somewhere in their family — a loved one in a nursing home facility, or a family member being cared for at home because of advancing age or a disability (or both). So, there is no need to spend very many words in this column on the catastrophic effect these events can have on a family, crossing all generations. You already know that. What you may not know is the urgency of taking action. The ability to buy long-term care (LTC) insurance is based on your health. Putting the decision off, or “waiting until next year,” can be problematic. As we have talked about in this space many, many times before, no one will ring a bell for you the night before your health changes. In addition to the required premium commitment increasing every year with your age, you run the increased risk of developing a health issue that can prevent you from buying — not a very good position to be in. When you make the decision to talk about LTC, come to the Knights of Columbus. In addition to providing life insurance and guaranteed retirement products to our members and their families, we also have a very competitive long-term care product available through our agents. Since entering this market in 2000, nearly 30,000 LTC policies have been sold to K of C members and their wives. While some companies in this line of business have had difficulty, our product continues to perform well with no premium increases on existing policies. Your agent will help you select the plan that’s right for you, and together you will arrive at an affordable premium that offers you the coverage you need. We can show you several different options — facility-only coverage, home care or a combination of both. Our agents are professionally trained to answer your questions — but you have to invite them in. I urge you to not delay. Think only of your own “longterm care experience.” I don’t think you want yourself or your family in that position. And don’t worry about the cost. The cost is not the problem; it is the solution to the problem. If you are interested in finding out more about the Knights of
