In Memoriam
Archbishop Thomas C. Kelly, OP
By F. Robert Fleck, PGK, PSD, FVSM
The Knights of Columbus lost a great member and friend in the passing of Archbishop Kelly on December 14, 2011.
I can recall one evening during the summer of 1982 when the phone rang at home while we were eating supper. The party on the line asked if this is Bob Fleck with the Knights of Columbus and I naturally reply, "Yes". "This is Tom Kelly, your new Archbishop", he said. I was told that if I needed any information concerning the Knights I should call you. I have always wanted to join the Knights of Columbus but with my various assignments, and frequent moves I have never had the opportunity.
My problem is that I have on my desk four invitations from four different Councils to join their ranks. As you may know, if I join one of them, the others will feel offended. Can I join the State Council? I explained that the State Council does not have individual memberships. The State Council is made up of all the Councils in Kentucky. I told him that I would try to alleviate his problem and asked him if he would like to join his old college council. I knew from reading about him that he was a graduate of Providence College and that they had a College Council. He was surprised to learn that was possible. He wanted to be sure that he would be a member in Kentucky so I told him that if you are a member, you are a member anywhere.
The next morning I called Virgil Decant, the Supreme Knight at that time, and asked if this would be possible. I was assured that it would be proper. The Supreme Knight told me to get him to fill out an application form; I should sign it as his sponsor and send it directly to his office. He then told me he would take care of the rest. I asked the Supreme Knight if it would be possible to make an exception and allow him to join the Fourth Degree at the same time without waiting the required months. Do it he said. So with one full <>sweep the Archbishop became a 3rd and 4th Degree member of the order.
The next Sunday Archbishop Kelly was celebrant for a Mass for the Knights and before the Mass he asked if he could address the members as "Brother Knights." I told him that he is now a full fledge member and can use the title. He was thrilled and explained that he has always wanted to do this.
I can also recall his first Derby Dinner attendance. He called and asked if he should attend and I told him he definitely needed to be there. Attending dinner such as that was not one of his biggest thrills but he said he would go, offer the benediction, meet some of the attendees (table hop) and leave. I can tell you now that he never left and attended, I believe every Derby Dinner after that.
He and his mother accompanied us to several Supreme Conventions. The first one was in Columbus, OH. I asked if he wanted to ride with us and he said no, my mother would drive me. He thought he may have to leave early and then we would be obliged to leave. He stayed for the entire week.
Yes, the Knights of Columbus, Betty and I lost a good friend.

PRAYERS - The R&L Crew has been and continues to be a viable part of why we survive as K of C Council and Corporation. We are all praying for the safe recovery of Brother Knight Ed Dunagan who on Tuesday, January 10th had a triple by-pass which apparently went very well. During the initial recovery stages other serious complications set in and as I write this on Thursday, January 26th he is still in Intensive Care.

Fourth Degree Chalice Fund
As many of you are aware, our Fourth Degree Assembly participates in an optional Chalice Fund. The Chalice Fund enables Sir Knights to purchase a chalice and have it inscribed with their name on the bottom.
The chalice is presented to a Priest of the Knight’s Choice. Sir Knights may opt to donate their chalice to a Priest while they are still living, or if they are deceased, the family of the deceased Knight will determine the recipient of the Chalice. Thus daily the chalice with the name of the Knight is raised in the sublime sacrifice of the Mass each time the Chalice is used.
As of this date, seventy-two (72) of the Knights in our Assembly are participating in the Chalice Fund. There are seminarians (especially in Africa and in the Philippines) who are in need of a chalice. If your chalice has been paid for in full and you wish to get it engraved and donate it soon, please order it by contacting me.Honorary/Honorary Life Membership Requirements
Dear Brother Knights,
A question has been asked about the dues structure for Bishop Spalding Council, namely, what is the dues structure? There are three levels of membership- Regular, Honorary and Honorary Life. The dues for the Regular members are $100 annually; the dues for the Honorary member are $10 annually and the Honorary Life member is exempt from dues. In order to qualify for Honorary membership one has to reach the age of 65 and have been a member for 25 consecutive years. In order to qualify for Honorary Life membership one has to reach the age of 75 and have been a member for 25 consecutive years. If you think you qualify, please drop me a note at the Council address with your information, and if you are eligible, I’ll process the forms.

FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR
HAPPY NEW YEAR!- 2011 was a happy year for our Assembly, despite the flooding in April. We have more active members this past year and our Color Guard has grown to its largest size yet with 25 Sir Knights on the roster. Lets keep the momentum going and make 2012 even more successful!
THE CHRISTMAS PARTY - On December 14 was a great success and a special thanks to Ron for a Delicious Roast Beef meal with all the "fixins". A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to the award recipients this year who were:
2011 Dedication Award was presented to SK Frank Frick for his high attendance at the Death Watches this year. SK Frick has the highest attendance record for 2011 honoring our fellow Knights who have passed away.
2011 Award of Honor to SK Jim French our Color Corps Commander for his successful efforts increasing the ranks of the Color Corps to an all-time high and for keeping us organized as we represent our Assembly with honor and dignity.
2011 Loyalty Award to SK Paul Martin, our Faithful Admiral, whose knowledge about the Knights is invaluable and who is our "go to" Knight. SK Martin is willing to share his past experiences to help us remain an active and vibrant Assembly with lots of activity and opportunities to serve our members.
Special appreciation to the following 4th Degree members who on short notice went to the Cathedral on Monday, December 19th in regalia to be present along with other Assembly members as an Honor Guard for Archbishop Kelly: Sir Knights Jim French, Joe Miller, Harold Shoaf, J. Webb Hesen and Rick Krekel.
WINTER STAG AND GAME DAY IS FEBRUARY 18 - Mark your calendars and hold the date for our Assembly Stag and Game Day. The Winter Stag Party on February 18 will start at 2 PM and is ending- well who knows?
For $10 you will enjoy chili and/or bean soup, 2 drinks, and lots of opportunities for card games and other games of chance that will offer all attendees from both the Council and the Assembly and their guests the opportunity for good fellowship. Not a game player? The Stag party will provide a great opportunity to network with fellow 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Degree Knights and share stories and memories. What a great way to cope with the Winter Blues!
DON’T FORGET BOOKS FOR VETS. We are still collecting paperback books for the VA Hospital. Just bring it to K of C when you come for lunch or dinner.

LONG-TERM CARE BY THOMAS P. SMITH JR. EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT There are very few people who have not heard or
Brother Knights… Dear Sir Knights: Everyone is busy now days and we all have obligations- things to do- places to be! Recently I reviewed the By Laws for our 4th Degree Archbishop Floersh Assembly #2008 and it states: "the Faithful Captain shall assure good attendance at the meetings." This is a challenge. At the last 4th Degree meeting we had 13 Sir Knights in attendance- that is about 13% of our members and less than a quorum. Our Faithful Navigator, SK Jim French, asked me to seek ways to improve attendance. After the meeting, I talked to Grand Knight Steve Oswald and discovered that at the last Council meeting there was only 27 members present- that is even a smaller turn out with only 3.6% of the members of the Council attending a meeting. So the Council is suffering a similar problem. So this is a plea to all of you who are reading this article. If you are receiving the Good Knight and are a member, I am asking you to come back to the meetings and be present and participate. If you do not come for some reason and would like to see changes made in the meetings, I am asking everyone to send me your ideas about how we can increase attendance.
They have given me some ideas such as: Knights of Columbus Meeting Ideas to Ponder 1. Meet less often 2. Have special topics of interest for some meetings and announce it in the Good Knight. 3. Consider having speakers 4. Have food; perhaps include the wives for a potluck night. While they socialize downstairs we can meet upstairs and then have dinner together. 5. Have an attendance lottery. Each time you come to a meeting you get your name in the drawing for a special prize. Thus the more meetings you attend the more chances you have to win the attendance prize. 6. Have a movie night 7. Schedule a night at a Louisville Bats game 8. Survey all members in the Good Knight asking what would make them come to meetings This last suggestions (#8 above) is the reason I am writing this article - Do you have an idea that may improve attendance and make you come to K of C meetings more often? Please share your ideas with us- Faithful Captain Ken Rosenbaum - 228-9199 PO Box 202, Harrods Creek, KY 40027
readabout long-term care insurance. Just as there are very few people who do not have a “long-term care experience” somewhere in their family — a loved one in a nursing home facility, or a family member being cared for at home because of advancing age or a disability (or both). So, there is no need to spend very many words in this column on the catastrophic effect these events can have on a family, crossing all generations. You already know that. What you may not know is the urgency of taking action. The ability to buy long-term care (LTC) insurance is based on your health. Putting the decision off, or “waiting until next year,” can be problematic. As we have talked about in this space many, many times before, no one will ring a bell for you the night before your health changes. In addition to the required premium commitment increasing every year with your age, you run the increased risk of developing a health issue that can prevent you from buying — not a very good position to be in. When you make the decision to talk about LTC, come to the Knights of Columbus. In addition to providing life insurance and guaranteed retirement products to our members and their families, we also have a very competitive long-term care product available through our agents. Since entering this market in 2000, nearly 30,000 LTC policies have been sold to K of C members and their wives. While some companies in this line of business have had difficulty, our product continues to perform well with no premium increases on existing policies. Your agent will help you select the plan that’s right for you, and together you will arrive at an affordable premium that offers you the coverage you need. We can show you several different options — facility-only coverage, home care or a combination of both. Our agents are professionally trained to answer your questions — but you have to invite them in. I urge you to not delay. Think only of your own “longterm care experience.” I don’t think you want yourself or your family in that position. And don’t worry about the cost. The cost is not the problem; it is the solution to the problem. If you are interested in finding out more about the Knights of
