POOL/CONCESSION STAND/PARK…

SPECIAL NOTICE

The pool will be open every WEEKEND IN SEPTEMBER, weather permitting. We normally close after Labor Day, but because of the extreme weather (HOT) we have experienced, some stormy weather we had, both of which kept the attendance down; Dennis Bosse, Greg Johnson and the GK have agreed with me, we will be open the three weekends after Labor Day. We have changed the hours slightly: Saturday 1P-7P; Sunday 1P-6P. Guest fee still apply to those who do not belong to the Swim Club.

CLUBHOUSE – I know we went through some very hot days this past month and that we could not keep the second floor very cool during Friday and Sunday dinners when the outside temperatures were in the 90’s. With a lot of support including money, labor and a lot of sweat we have added two more A/C units to the second floor and it appears we are able to make the temperature on the second floor a little more comfortable. It is still important, when the outside temperature is near 90 degrees or above to keep the DRAPES AND BLINDS CLOSED ON THE RIVER SIDE. We maybe able to open the drapes on the road side late in the afternoon.

Now we must get our attendance back up, especially for Friday dinners.

DOCKS/HURRICANE DECK – I suspect our boaters are looking for some reasonable temperatures as we move through September and into October which allow them to enjoy the hurricane deck, cooking out and giving the air conditioners a break. We still have almost three months before we have to move to winter docks or pull out, so that’s plenty of time to enjoy our river and boating.

CORPORATION CHARITY PROJECT – With September here, we are involved in three charity activities: SAVE ALUMINUM CANS (CORPORATION); SAVE PAPERBACK BOOKS (4TH DEGREE); AND OUR ANNUAL TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE (ALL THE COUNCIL).

When you receive this issue we will have sent another load of aluminum cans to River Metals and hopefully start filling the dumpster again. Very easy, save those cans and bring them to the clubhouse, we do the rest. Save those paperback books and bring them to the clubhouse, the fourth degree, Ken Rosenbaum does the rest.

September is also the month that the council begins its annual Tootsie Roll Drive which also has three ways for our members and friends of the council to participate: Individual donations - if you donate $100 or more you will be listed on the HONOR ROLL FRONT PAGE of the Good Knight; you can volunteer to work a few hours at the roadblocks at 42 and 22; and then there is the APOSTLES that donate $500 or more and remain anonymous. They will be receiving letters from me in the very near future!!

REMEMBER – Every dollar we raise in the Tootsie Roll Drive goes into our Council’s Charity Fund and in turn is given out at our annual KY Derby Charity Dinner to agencies and groups who work with and help the mentally disabled: 100%.

DON’T FORGET FRIDAY AND SUNDAY DINNERS,

WE NEED YOUR PARTICIPATION.

Grand Knight Notes

By Steve Oswald
Grand Knight
Bishop Spalding Council

Greetings, Wow how much hotter can it get this summer! Nice thing is that as I write this, the daytime highs have only been in the mid 80’s. Bring on the cooler weather!

The month of September is not particularly busy. The last several weeks since school began for the year, we adjusted the hours of operation for the park and pool. We will be open at regular times on Labor Day weekend Sept. 4th, 5th, & 6th.

We have decided to keep the pool open every weekend in September, weather permitting. The hours have slightly changed: Saturday- 1-7 P and Sunday 1-6 P. Guest fee still apply to anyone who wants to come that does not belong to the Swim Club.

The first floor bar will be open on Saturday Sept. 4th for the UofL vs UK football game. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 P, I will be at the game! I’ll wave from the stands at all who are watching on TV! We will of course have the game on the TV’s in the downstairs bar. Also on the same weekend, as I stated earlier, is Labor Day weekend. On Sunday Sept. 5th there will be a picnic in the park with games for the kids, etc. and we will have recorded music. We will have regular dinner service at the clubhouse, so plan on making a day out of it. Rainout day will be Monday Sept. 6th.

We had a fairly good size crowd for the 4th degree picnic in the park on August 11th despite of a heavy thunderstorm about an hour before the event was to begin. A good time was had by all, and a big round of thanks goes to Bill Howard, Dennis Bosse, Greg Johnson (the cook), Paul Martin, and his sister Darlene. Well done guys!

We have the NFL sweepstakes cards once again. The tickets are $10 each. This is a charity fundraiser for the State Council. If interested in purchasing a ticket, see Greg Johnson or myself.

There will be a 4th degree exemplification in Bowling Green on October 9th and 10th. FN Jim French will have more details in his notes.

Please keep in mind the weekend of October 1, 2, and 3rd will be our annual Tootsie Roll Drive. We will be needing volunteers to man the road block at US 42, and KY 22. Even if you can only work a couple of hours, it would be a big help. We will also be accepting donations at the clubhouse.

Hopefully, September will finally start cooling off so that it seems like football weather! Please continue to support the Friday and Sunday dinners, and the Wednesday lunches.

Next meeting will be Wednesday Sept. 1st at 7:30 PM. I will see you there.

Fraternally,

Steve

Fourth Degree Chalice Fund

As many of you are aware, our Fourth Degree Assembly participates in an optional Chalice Fund. The Chalice Fund enables Sir Knights to purchase a chalice and have it inscribed with their name on the bottom.

The chalice is presented to a Priest of the Knight’s Choice. Sir Knights may opt to donate their chalice to a Priest while they are still living, or if they are deceased, the family of the deceased Knight will determine the recipient of the Chalice. Thus daily the chalice with the name of the Knight is raised in the sublime sacrifice of the Mass each time the Chalice is used.

As of this date, seventy-two (72) of the Knights in our Assembly are participating in the Chalice Fund. There are seminarians (especially in Africa and in the Philippines) who are in need of a chalice. If your chalice has been paid for in full and you wish to get it engraved and donate it soon, please order it by contacting me.

Honorary/Honorary Life Membership Requirements

Dear Brother Knights,

A question has been asked about the dues structure for Bishop Spalding Council, namely, what is the dues structure? There are three levels of membership- Regular, Honorary and Honorary Life. The dues for the Regular members are $100 annually; the dues for the Honorary member are $10 annually and the Honorary Life member is exempt from dues. In order to qualify for Honorary membership one has to reach the age of 65 and have been a member for 25 consecutive years. In order to qualify for Honorary Life membership one has to reach the age of 75 and have been a member for 25 consecutive years. If you think you qualify, please drop me a note at the Council address with your information, and if you are eligible, I’ll process the forms.

       ARCHBISHOP JOHN FLOERSH
                ASSEMBLY #2008

     Jim French  FAITHFUL N
AVIGATOR

Archbishop John Floersh Assembly, #2008, Jim French Faithful NavigatorcbAbcfN

Many thanks for a wonderful picnic in the park. The weather was warm and humid , but the brief rain before the picnic started helped to keep us somewhat comfortable. There are many folks to thank for their efforts. Bill Howard our F/Pilot who was the Chair of the event. Greg Johnson and Dennis Bosse for setting up the park, and Head Chef Greg and Dennis, his assistant, for their fine cooking. Special thanks to Paul Martin for his help with the special beverages. Thanks to Darlene Moyer who dispensed the beverages to the thirsty group. Thanks to John Aubrey for ordering food, and all scheduling that he handles. Everyone in attendance prepared some great dishes for our enjoyment. Thanks to everyone who came to the picnic and made it the great event it was. There were some 45 plus folks who braved the hot and humid weather. We had great competitive games and the gimpy F/N and his partner F/C managed to win a game of corn hole. At the end all helped clean up and put things back where they belonged.

At our meeting on September 8th we will be treated to a Chicken and Dumpling dinner made by our Faithful Captain Ken Rosenbaum. I have it on good authority that dessert will be provided by Karen Segars. We are inviting the ladies of our members to join us for dinner, and they will gather in the lower level until our meeting is over. So here is a great opportunity to take your wife out to dinner at no cost, and enjoy the camaraderie of all those in attendance. If you have not been to a 4th degree meeting in awhile, this would be a great one to attend. Free beverages, food, and camaraderie of your fellow 4th degree members and their wives.

On October 10th, 2010 there will be a Fourth Degree exemplification held in Bowling Green, KY. Please let me or our Faithful Admiral Paul Martin know if you are interested in joining our Fourth Degree Assembly. We will need you to register by September 22, 2010. You only need to be a third degree member for at least 6 months and one day.

Your presence at our meetings is greatly appreciated by all your officers and trustees, and your regular attendance will make our assembly grow. As always if you have any suggestions that you think would be helpful to our Assembly, please let me know.

Don’t forget the Wednesday luncheons, and the Friday and Sunday dinners at the council. Great food and wonderful prices.

LONG-TERM CARE

BY THOMAS P. SMITH JR.

EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT

There are very few people who have not heard or

readabout long-term care insurance. Just as there are very few people who do not have a “long-term care experience” somewhere in their family — a loved one in a nursing home facility, or a family member being cared for at home because of advancing age or a disability (or both). So, there is no need to spend very many words in this column on the catastrophic effect these events can have on a family, crossing all generations. You already know that. What you may not know is the urgency of taking action. The ability to buy long-term care (LTC) insurance is based on your health. Putting the decision off, or “waiting until next year,” can be problematic. As we have talked a
bout in this space many, many times before, no one will ring a bell for you the night before your health changes.  In addition to the required premium commitment increasing every year with your age, you run the increased risk of developing a health issue that can prevent you from buying — not a very good position to be in.  When you make the decision to talk about LTC, come to the Knights of Columbus. In addition to providing life insurance and guaranteed retirement products to our members and their families, we also have a very competitive long-term care product available through our agents. Since entering this market in 2000, nearly 30,000 LTC policies have been sold to K of C members and their wives. While some companies in this line of business have had difficulty, our product continues to perform well with no premium increases on existing policies.  Your agent will help you select the plan that’s right for you, and together you will arrive at an affordable premium that offers you the coverage you need. We can show you several different options — facility-only coverage, home care or a combination of both.  Our agents are professionally trained to  answer your questions — but you have to invite them in. I urge you to not delay. Think only of your own “longterm care experience.” I don’t think you want yourself or your family in that position. And don’t worry about the cost. The cost is not the problem; it is the solution to the problem.  If you are interested in finding out more about the Knights of Columbus Long-term care coverage, please call your local field agent, or myself.  I can be reached at  859-331-0249  859-331-0249 .   We are here to serve the insurance needs of our members and look forward to working with you.

Brother Knights…
            WE NEED YOU!

Dear Sir Knights:

Everyone is busy now days and we all have obligations- things to do- places to be! Recently I reviewed the By Laws for our 4th Degree Archbishop Floersh Assembly #2008 and it states: "the Faithful Captain shall assure good attendance at the meetings." This is a challenge.

At the last 4th Degree meeting we had 13 Sir Knights in attendance- that is about 13% of our members and less than a quorum. Our Faithful Navigator, SK Jim French, asked me to seek ways to improve attendance. After the meeting, I talked to Grand Knight Steve Oswald and discovered that at the last Council meeting there was only 27 members present- that is even a smaller turn out with only 3.6% of the members of the Council attending a meeting. So the Council is suffering a similar problem.

So this is a plea to all of you who are reading this article. If you are receiving the Good Knight and are a member, I am asking you to come back to the meetings and be present and participate. If you do not come for some reason and would like to see changes made in the meetings, I am asking everyone to send me your ideas about how we can increase attendance.

They have given me some ideas such as:

Knights of Columbus Meeting Ideas to Ponder

1. Meet less often

2. Have special topics of interest for some meetings and announce it in the Good Knight.

3. Consider having speakers

4. Have food; perhaps include the wives for a potluck night. While they socialize downstairs we can meet upstairs and then have dinner together.

5. Have an attendance lottery. Each time you come to a meeting you get your name in the drawing for a special prize. Thus the more meetings you attend the more chances you have to win the attendance prize.

6. Have a movie night

7. Schedule a night at a Louisville Bats game

8. Survey all members in the Good Knight asking what would make them come to meetings

This last suggestions (#8 above) is the reason I am writing this article -

Do you have an idea that may improve attendance and make you come to K of C meetings more often?

Please share your ideas with us-
Thank You
